Statistics worldwide show the same difference: women live on average 5-7 years longer than men, and in Lithuania, this difference is almost a decade. The classic explanation is women's hormones, genetics, and less risky behavior. All of this is true and significantly influences longevity. However, recent scientific research has uncovered another layer worth knowing specifically for Mother's Day: it seems that motherhood itself contributes to longevity.
Sounds unbelievable? At first glance, yes. Carrying, giving birth, breastfeeding, sleepless nights – an immense burden on a mother's body, which, it would seem, should be utterly exhausting. But scientific data paints a vastly different picture.
The Paradox of Motherhood
Just a decade ago, many scientists relied on the "disposable soma" theory – if resources are limited, what is given to reproduction is taken from the body's own resources. According to this logic, having more children means a shorter life.
However, a massive meta-analysis covering 2.8 million women from various parts of the world revealed the opposite. The best longevity indicators are associated not with zero children, but with an average number of children, i.e., 2-4 children. This "golden middle ground" links motherhood with a stronger trajectory of women's health throughout their lives.
A Body That Can Regenerate
One of the most surprising discoveries of recent years is how a mother's body reacts to pregnancy at the biological age level.
Using so-called "epigenetic clocks," scientists can now measure how old our cells truly are – regardless of the date on the birth certificate. Studies have shown that during pregnancy, the biological age of cells increases, sometimes by as much as two additional years. However, it has also been observed that after childbirth, the reverse process begins. For some women, biological age can decrease by up to eight years within a few months.

This is a unique mechanism: the cycle of motherhood, in the long term, not only does not age but even has the power to rejuvenate. Such recovery is most effective when the mother gets enough sleep, breastfeeds the baby, and eats well herself. The old saying "motherhood is exhausting" is partly true, but it misses the most important part: a mother's body can recover what it temporarily lent to a new human, and often recovers it with added interest.
Late Fertility – an Indicator of Longevity
Studies of long-lived women have revealed another interesting pattern. Those women who naturally, without reproductive assistance, give birth after the age of 33 have twice the chance of living to old age than those who give birth before the age of 29. And for women who give birth after 40, this probability becomes almost four times higher.
This does not mean that giving birth later itself "prolongs" life. Rather, late natural fertility is a signal from the body for longevity. If the reproductive system is still functioning at forty, usually other systems also age slower: telomeres (protective caps on DNA cells) are longer, DNA repair mechanisms are stronger, and hormone balance is more robust. Scientists describe this as a reproductive resilience test that helps identify a genetically slower-aging organism.
Grandmothers – an Essential Evolutionary Element
Why do humans, unlike most mammals, live for decades after the end of their reproductive age? One of the strongest explanations is grandmothers.
The grandmother hypothesis states that older women of our species, by helping to raise grandchildren, contributed so much to family prosperity that natural selection favored the trait of longer life. Mathematical models show that this effect alone could have extended human lifespan from ape-like levels to modern levels over approximately 60,000 years.

This idea is complemented by another exceptional finding: people who become parents through adoption live longer than both childless individuals and biological parents. This is one of the strongest pieces of evidence that a large part of the benefits of motherhood are determined not by the act of childbirth itself, but by human closeness – emotional support, responsibility, and interpersonal relationships that are created for life.

Perhaps the most interesting thing is not how many years a woman lives longer than a man, but why.
