The fast pace of life, constant rush, and societal pressure to always look and feel impeccable encourage us to seek quick solutions. The health and wellness market is overflowing with products promising instant energy boosts, deep sleep, smoother skin, or rapid body shape changes. But how many of these widely advertised "miracles" are backed by solid science, and how many are just empty promises?
In this article, we will critically examine several currently popular product types that, despite significant consumer interest, lack serious scientific basis or rely on a flawed understanding of biology. Simply put, we will provide you with tools to help distinguish scientifically sound solutions from pseudoscience.
When marketing clashes with reality
Imagine your body as a complex ecosystem where each organ performs a precise function. Just as you cannot pour gasoline into an electric car and expect it to work, the body cannot absorb substances in ways that contradict its fundamental biology. Let's look at specific cases where marketing promises clash with scientific reality.
1. Transdermal magnesium – sprays, oils, and magnesium salt baths
Product advertising promise. Spraying magnesium "oil" (usually a magnesium chloride solution) directly onto the skin or bathing in Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is said to provide instant muscle relaxation and better sleep, as magnesium is supposedly absorbed directly through the skin.
Scientific reality. Our skin acts as an extremely effective guardian – its main task is not to let substances in but to protect the body from the outside world. Magnesium ion (Mg²⁺) is a water-soluble, charged particle. It is almost impossible for it to penetrate the outer fatty layer of the skin, which protects against bacteria and toxic chemicals.
Studies confirm this biological logic: there are no reliable clinical data to show a significant increase in blood or muscle magnesium concentrations after such a spray or bath. It's true that the pleasant feeling after a hot bath is real. However, the reason for this is the muscle-relaxing warmth of the water and the overall relaxation ritual, not the absorption of magnesium through the skin.
2. Alkaline water
Product advertising promise. It is claimed that by drinking alkaline water, which has a higher pH than regular water, one can "alkalize" the body, neutralize acids, and thus maintain optimal condition.
Scientific reality. Like trying to change the temperature of a swimming pool by adding a cup of hot water, such is the "effect" of alkaline water on your body.
First, any alkaline water entering the stomach is instantly neutralized by extremely acidic gastric juices, which have a pH of 1.5–3.5 – roughly the same as car battery acid. Second, our body maintains an incredibly strict blood pH balance (around 7.4) through a process called homeostasis. This balance is regulated by the lungs and kidneys – they work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to keep our blood pH stable.
No food or drink can significantly change blood pH. And this is a very good thing – if blood pH changed by even 0.2 points, there would be a serious danger. If it changed further, the body's biochemistry would simply stop functioning.
3. Detox foot patches
Product advertising promise. By applying a patch to the sole of the foot overnight, it darkens in the morning – supposedly proving that accumulated unwanted substances have been drawn out through the skin.
Scientific reality. The body's true cleansing organs are the liver and kidneys – these are the best biological filtration systems that constantly remove waste. They operate much more complexly and efficiently than any patch.
The darkening of the patch? A chemical reaction to deceive the eye: the substances in the patch (usually wood vinegar) react with foot sweat, changing its color. The same effect can be achieved by simply applying plain water to the patch. No "toxins" were drawn out – only the customer's wallet became lighter.
4. Collagen supplements for skin
Product advertising promise. Taking collagen supplements is promised to directly reach facial skin, reduce wrinkles, and increase elasticity.
Scientific reality. Here, two visions of how digestion works clash. The digestive system acts like biochemical mills that break everything down into its smallest components.
Collagen is a protein – just like any other protein from meat, eggs, or legumes. In the digestive tract, it is broken down into its constituent parts – amino acids and peptides. The body uses these components where they are most needed: to repair muscles, maintain internal organ functions, regenerate tissues, or for any other part of the body.
However, the situation is not that simple. Newer studies with hydrolyzed collagen (specifically broken down into smaller peptides) show certain results for skin condition. Some studies note improvements in skin hydration or elasticity. The problem is that many of these studies are quite short-term, small-scale, and often include other substances (vitamin C, hyaluronic acid) in the formulations, making it difficult to say whether the effect truly comes from collagen.
Most importantly, there is no biological mechanism that would ensure that ingested collagen amino acids are used specifically for facial skin collagen synthesis, and not, for example, for joint tissue repair. The body itself decides where the absorbed substances are most needed, not us.
5. Cleansing teas and juice programs (Juice cleanse)
Product advertising promise. A multi-day program promises to reset the system, cleanse the body, provide energy, and quickly change measurements.
Scientific reality. Have you noticed that the term "cleansing" in this context never defines what exactly is being removed? This is not accidental – it is intentional vagueness.
The liver and kidneys work as wonderful filters and cope perfectly with real processes – they remove metabolites and other waste products. If these organs were not functioning, we would need not a juice program but urgent specialist intervention.
And that rapid reduction in measurements, which often happens during such a program? This is not fat loss. It is water leaving the body due to the depletion of glycogen reserves and, unfortunately, muscle mass loss due to a drastic lack of protein. The scales show a smaller number, but the body composition has changed for the worse.
6. Testosterone Boosters
Product advertising promise. Natural herbal supplements promise to raise testosterone levels and thus increase energy, muscle mass, and masculine strength.
Scientific reality. Here, it is very important to distinguish between medically supervised hormone balancing and freely available supplements.
The vast majority of legal, over-the-counter supplements containing popular herbs (e.g., Tribulus terrestris) or amino acids (e.g., D-aspartate) show no significant effect on testosterone levels in healthy men in reliable scientific studies.
Such supplements may only have an effect on those with a significant deficiency of specific micronutrients, such as zinc or vitamin D deficiency. But in such a case, it would be sufficient to consume only the missing element, not an expensive mixture with many ineffective ingredients. Increased activity, if felt, does not necessarily mean increased testosterone levels – the placebo effect is very powerful.
7. "Miracle" body shaping products
Product advertising promise. A product that will boost metabolism, block appetite, and melt away pounds without doing anything else.
Scientific reality. The only scientifically proven principle is energy balance – we must expend more calories than we consume. The laws of thermodynamics also apply to the human body.
Popular ingredients such as raspberry ketones or Garcinia cambogia have no strong clinical evidence. Others, such as caffeine or green tea extract (EGCG), may have a minimal, temporary effect on thermogenesis (when we use calories to raise body temperature). However, this effect is clinically almost insignificant – we are talking about a few tens of extra calories per day, not hundreds.
Historically, there were potent synthetic substances that indeed affected metabolism. However, such substances were banned due to serious adverse side effects on body systems. This is a great reminder: if something quickly and artificially alters metabolism, it most likely comes at a cost.
No supplement will ever replace a balanced diet.
Why are these myths so persistent?
If the science is clear, why do these products thrive? The answer lies not in bad will or intentional deception – it is much more complex and relates to how our minds work.
- Placebo effect. This is one of the most powerful effects in history. If we sincerely believe that something will help us, the brain can change physiology – alleviate discomfort, improve mood, increase energy. The placebo effect is not imagined – it is a real, measurable phenomenon. It just has nothing to do with the chemical composition of the product itself.
- False attribution of cause. A person takes a magnesium bath, where hot water relaxes the body and mind, and sleeps better. The effect is attributed to magnesium absorption, not to the hot water and relaxation ritual. Or – after starting "detox" juices, a person naturally stops eating processed food and sweets. Well-being improves. Therefore, the person attributes the credit to the juices, and not to the fact that they simply changed their diet.
- Desire for an easy way out. Psychologically, it is much easier to buy a patch or tea than to change deeply ingrained habits of diet, sleep, and physical activity. A quick solution promises results without effort – this is very attractive.
- Visual "proof." A darkened patch or a minus shown on the scales (even if only water has left the body) seems like an indisputable result. Our brains are evolutionarily adapted to look for patterns and causes – even where they do not exist.
How can the consumer not get lost?
Critical thinking and healthy skepticism are true wisdom. Before purchasing a product that promises too much and too quickly, let's ask ourselves:
- What is the mechanism of action? Is it logical? For example, can a substance penetrate the skin? Can it survive stomach acid? Can the body truly "direct" it to a specific organ?
- What is the evidence? Are the claims based on influencer testimonials or large-scale clinical trials? Personal stories are certainly inspiring, but they are not science. One successful case does not mean a trend.
- Does something sound too good to be true? Most likely it is, if the product promises a quick, easy, universal solution to a complex problem. Real solutions require time and effort.
- Does the product clearly state what it does specifically? If the description uses vague terms ("energy field," "vibrating molecules") or promises without explaining the mechanism – these are red flags for the buyer.
